Hervé Tullet has to be one of our all time favourite children's authors. Full of colour and quirky hand-drawn characters and illustrations, his picture books are both fun and interactive for children of all ages. Help! We Need a Title! is no exception (and possibly one of his best yet). Open the front cover to find a pig and a fairy playing pingpong, who soon realise that they have company… (you!) Thus begins a series of wonderfully amusing remarks and exclamations from the characters themselves and their animal friends who gather on the page and realise with slight trepidation that there is the expectation of a story - but no story exists because the book isn't finished yet! So off they go in search of the author, and stumble upon Hervé Tullet himself, at work in his studio. In brief, he tells a quick story involving all his characters - but they're not happy… It's too short… the ending is 'so-so'… (but they look good in the pictures, at least!) Cue angry author, who instructs the reader to turn off the light and tell any other readers not to choose this book, "at least not until we have a title". Hence the animals are alone again, with nothing left to do but to wave bye bye and carry on with their pingpong game... A story all about an unfinished story - with is very own story within it! You don't get much cleverer than that. And it's as entertaining for us as grown-ups as it is for the kids. A wonderful Christmas gift idea, £12.50 from The Kid Who.
